Study Methods That Actually Work (And the Popular Ones That Don't)
The most common study methods are also among the least effective, and there's a reason the mismatch persists: the ineffective ones feel better. Rereading a chapter produces a comfortable sense of familiarity. Testing yourself produces the uncomfortable experience of not knowing things. Students reasonably interpret comfort as learning — and it's exactly backwards.

Why rereading and highlighting fail
Rereading creates fluency — text becomes easier to process each time — and the brain misreads that ease as mastery. But recognising material when it's in front of you is a different skill from producing it when it isn't, and an exam only ever tests the second.
Highlighting has the same problem, plus one of its own: it's a decision about what looks important, made before you understand the material well enough to judge. Students routinely finish a chapter with half of it highlighted, having made no decisions about meaning at all.
Neither is worthless as a first pass. The mistake is treating them as the whole study process rather than the beginning of it.
What works: retrieval practice
Close the book and try to produce the information from memory. The struggle to retrieve is what strengthens the memory — a phenomenon researchers call the testing effect, and one of the most consistently replicated findings in learning research.
In practice:
- The blank page. After reading a section, close everything and write down everything you can recall. Then check what you missed — those gaps are precisely your study list.
- Flashcards, used properly. Attempt an answer before flipping. Flipping quickly to "check" turns them back into rereading.
- Practice questions and past exams. The highest-yield resource available, especially from your own instructor — question style is remarkably consistent year to year.
- Explain it aloud. Teach the concept to an empty room or a patient friend. The point where your explanation falters is exactly where your understanding stops.
Retrieval feels worse than rereading. That's the signal it's working.
What works: spacing
Studying the same total hours spread across days beats concentrating them in one session. Each time you retrieve something after partly forgetting it, the memory is rebuilt stronger — forgetting a little is part of the mechanism, which is why massed practice in one sitting fails to produce durable learning.
A workable schedule for something you'll be examined on in three weeks:

Total time is similar to a single long cram session. Retention is dramatically better, and — importantly — the material is still there for the final, and for the next course that builds on it.

Rather than doing twenty problems of one type then twenty of another, mix them. Interleaving feels worse and produces worse practice-session performance — and better exam performance.
The reason is that blocked practice lets you apply the same method repeatedly without deciding which method applies. Exams don't announce the problem type. Interleaving trains the selection step, which is often the part students actually get wrong under pressure.
Building a study week
Most students overestimate how many genuinely focused hours they can produce. Eight to twelve pomodoros a day — roughly 3.5 to 5 hours of real focus — is a full, sustainable day for most people. Beyond that, quality falls off sharply and you're mostly buying guilt relief.
- Decide the task before starting the timer. "Chapter 7 problems 1–15", not "study chemistry."
- One task per session. Switching costs more than it feels like.
- Phone in another room. Not face-down on the desk — merely being visible measurably reduces available attention.
- Break properly. Stand up, move, look out a window. Social feeds don't rest the systems you've just been using.
- Hardest material first, while attention is freshest.
- Stop at a planned time. A defined end makes starting easier tomorrow.
Prioritising by weight
Study effort should follow marks, not interest. An hour spent on a 40%-weighted final is worth eight hours spent perfecting a 5% assignment. Before exam season:
- Work out what you actually need on each remaining assessment — our final grade calculator does this precisely.
- Rank courses by how much is still at stake and how far you are from your target.
- Give the largest blocks to high-weight, high-gap courses.
- Accept "good enough" where the marginal mark isn't worth the hours.
This feels cynical and isn't — it's the only way to allocate a fixed number of hours across competing demands without burning out.
Sleep, and the limits of the all-nighter
Memory consolidation — the process that moves what you studied into durable storage — happens largely during sleep. An all-nighter therefore trades away the step that makes studying stick, on top of impairing reasoning, recall speed and judgement during the exam itself.
If you're choosing between one more hour of study and one more hour of sleep the night before an exam, sleep almost always wins. The exception is if you genuinely haven't encountered the material at all — but that's a scheduling failure, not a study strategy.
A worked comparison
Two students each spend six hours on a chapter. Student A rereads it three times across one evening. Student B reads it once, does a blank-page recall, works practice problems, and returns twice more across the following week.
On a test the next day, they may score similarly — cramming does work for about 24 hours. On the final six weeks later, Student B retains substantially more, having spent the same total hours. Student A has to relearn most of it, effectively paying twice.
