Elsewhere norms differ sharply: much of Europe includes service in the price (round up or leave 5–10% for great service), Japan generally doesn't tip at all, and Australia treats tipping as genuinely optional. When traveling, a 30-second search for local custom saves both money and awkwardness.

Tip on the pre-tax amount?

Etiquette guides say the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal; in practice most people tip on the total because that's the number staring at them. On a 13% tax bill, tipping 18% pre-tax ≈ 16% post-tax — if you want the by-the-book version, enter the subtotal as the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip when a "service charge" is already added?
Generally no — an automatic gratuity (common for groups of 6+) is the tip. Adding more is generous but optional. Check the bill before doubling up.
How do we split when people ordered very differently?
Even splits are for roughly even meals. Otherwise, each person pays their items plus their share of tax and tip — apply your tip percentage to each person's subtotal, which this calculator handles if you run it per person.
Is it rude to tip with a card instead of cash?
No — card tips reach staff in nearly all modern establishments. Cash is still appreciated at small independents where card fees bite.
