Why paper weights are confusing

Outside North America, paper weight is simply grams per square metre (gsm). In the US and Canada, weight is quoted in pounds, and it is the weight of a ream of 500 sheets cut to a basic size. That basic size is different for each type of paper, so the same number of pounds can be very different papers. The converter works through gsm, which is the same for every paper, and shows the equivalent in each pound system.

Which weight for which job?

Weight (gsm)Commonly used for
Up to 60Newsprint and very light inserts
61 to 90Office and copy paper, letterheads
91 to 130Flyers, menus and thin brochures
131 to 170Brochures and posters
171 to 250Heavier brochures, covers and light postcards
251 to 350Postcards, business cards and folders
Over 350Premium business cards and rigid cards

These are common choices, not rules. Coated, uncoated and recycled papers of the same weight feel different, and your printer's stock list is the final guide. Weights also vary slightly by maker, which is why 20 lb bond is sold as both 75 and 80 gsm.

Frequently asked questions

What is gsm?
GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of paper, so it measures how heavy the paper is regardless of the sheet size. 80 gsm is common office copy paper, and business cards are usually printed on stock of roughly 300 gsm or more.
Why is 80 lb text lighter than 80 lb cover?
US paper weights are the weight of 500 sheets of a basic size, and that basic size is different for each paper type. A bond sheet is 17 x 22 inches, a text sheet 25 x 38 inches and a cover sheet 20 x 26 inches. The same "80 lb" label therefore means a different real weight for each type: 80 lb text is about 118 gsm and 80 lb cover is about 216 gsm. Gsm has no such confusion, which is why it is the best way to compare paper.
What is 20 lb bond in gsm?
20 lb bond is about 75 gsm, the weight of ordinary office paper. In practice it is sold as 75 gsm or 80 gsm depending on the maker and the region.
Is a heavier paper always thicker?
Not always. Weight and thickness (caliper) are different. Thickness is measured in points, where one point is one thousandth of an inch, and papers of the same weight can differ in thickness depending on how bulky the fibres are and on the finish. If thickness matters, ask the supplier for the caliper as well as the weight.
What is oz per square yard?
A weight used for banner vinyl, fabric and some sign materials. One ounce per square yard is about 33.9 gsm, so a 13 oz banner vinyl is about 441 gsm. It is shown here so you can compare sign materials with paper on the same scale.
Which paper weight should I choose for my print?
It depends on the product and how it is handled. Typical choices are around 75 to 100 gsm for letterheads and office paper, 130 to 170 gsm for flyers and brochures, and 250 to 400 gsm for postcards and business cards. The table on this page lists the usual ranges. Your printer can show you samples and recommend a stock for the job.
